Commissioners salute Johnston industry
House-Autry Mills in Four Oaks has received the latest Industry Appreciation Award from the Johnston County Board of Commissioners and the county’s Economic Development Advisory Board.
The company started in 1812, when the House family immigrated from England to Newton Grove. The millstones for the original mill were shipped from England to the port at Wilmington. Once they reached port, they were ferried up the Cape Fear River and then transported by oxcart and mule team to the mill site in Newton Grove.
The House mill grew and eventually merged with the Autry Brothers Mill Co. in 1967 to form what is now called House-Autry Mills. In 2001, the company relocated to Four Oaks.
For many years, the company’s No. 1 product was corn meal. Over the years, it has added a number of traditionally-seasoned breaders and coatings for chicken, seafood, pork and other vegetables.
Also, House-Autry has added hushpuppies, biscuit and cornbread mixes, sauces and its Southern Baked product line.
“House-Autry’s steadfast support of Johnston County and the town of Four Oaks exemplifies what it means to be a great corporate citizen,” said Allen Wellons, president of the Johnston County Economic Development Advisory Board. “For over 200 years, they have called North Carolina home, and we are proud that their corporate roots are right here in Johnston County.”
Today, House-Autry products are available in thousands of grocery stores in 37 states.
