Police on Wednesday arrested a Clayton mother and charged her with the negligent child abuse of her 3-year-old son, who has been hospitalized for two weeks.
Aquilla Yvette Stewart, 40, of 75 Herndon Court, faces one count of felony negligent child abuse leading to serious bodily injury. She was held under a $150,000 bond.
The case dates back to Oct. 24, when Stewart called 911 to report an unconscious person at her home in the Mitchiner Hills neighborhood. Stewart said her son had fallen the day before and had appeared normal until she made the call.
But according to Clayton police, the 3-year-old boy suffers from a medical condition that requires him to receive medical attention as soon as possible after an accident or injury.
The boy was taken to the WakeMed Children’s ER and later transferred to the Duke Children’s Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Since being admitted to Duke, the boy has undergone multiple surgeries to treat devastating brain and skull injuries.
On Nov. 2, the Clayton Police Department received an intake complaint from the Johnston County Department of Social Services in reference to the child.
On Wednesday, the Duke University Campus Police assisted Clayton police in arresting Stewart, and Clayton detectives transported her to the Johnston County Jail.
