Clayton resident in ‘Velveteen Rabbit’
A Clayton resident has a role in an upcoming Raleigh Little Theatre production. Julia Ryan plays Boat in “The Velveteen Rabbit,” which opens March 6. Other show dates are March 7-8, 12-15 and 19-22 in the Gaddy-Goodwin Teaching Theatre, 301 Pogue St., Raleigh. American Music Jubilee, Eddie Miles

Clayton woman pens young adult novel
Cindy K. Green of Clayton has penned her first young adult novel, “Andrea & the Five-Day Challenge,” which will be available March 6 from Pelican Book Group. The cost is $13.99 for the paperback and $4.99 for the ebook. Green is a veteran home-school mom who has been teaching her children for the past 11 years. She taught middle school before and during home-schooling. Her book is the first in a series of four.
Art, Food Festival March 19 at JCC
The sixth annual Art and Food Festival Gala is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, March 19, in the Paul A. Johnston Auditorium at Johnston Community College, 245 College Road, Smithfield.
Proceeds will fund the 2015 Artists-in-the-School program, award scholarships to JCC students and pay for free community arts programming.
Gala tickets are $40 for singles and $75 for couples. The evening will feature sample dishes from Johnston restaurants, which will compete for Best Presentation, Best Entree, Best Dessert and Best Restaurant.
The Johnston County Arts Council will announce the winners of its juried art show, and local artists will display and sell their works. A variety of musicians will perform, and a silent auction will feature collaborative and individual artwork.

Clayton Visual Arts Inc. sponsors Third Thursday Art Chat, a monthly gathering that offers artists a chance to share ideas, art products, resources, marketing tips, etc. The monthly chat is on the third Thursday of the month in the Poole Room in The Clayton Center, 111 E. Second St., Clayton. The chat starts at 6:30 p.m.

Art class for children
Doodlebugs, a weekly art class for children ages 18 months to 4 years, has resumed at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center, 600 Booker Dairy Road, Smithfield. In sessions at 10 a.m. Friday, children experiment with dough, paper, watercolors, glue and more. For Smithfield residents, the cost is $5 per session or $19 for four sessions.
