Rouzer’s welfare bill would waste tax dollars
In response to Congressman David Rouzer’s “common sense” bill to reform welfare, allow me to share some data. Missouri spent $336,297 on drug testing for welfare recipients and had 48 positive tests. Oklahoma spent $385,872 for 297 positives in two years. Utah spent $64,566 spent for 29 positive tests.
Contrary to the congressman’s rhetoric, most welfare recipients are the elderly, children and the working poor, including, shamefully enough, veterans and current military. While employers spend their own money on drug testing for employees, Mr. Rouzer wants to spend our money on a program that has demonstrably failed everywhere it’s been tried.
Enough with demonizing the poor. The Republican fable of the welfare queen has been disproven repeatedly. I would much prefer my tax dollars be spent on drug testing all of our state representatives.
