Cleveland High School’s Cleveland Classic basketball tournament will feature 16 teams later this year. The event, set for Dec. 27-30 at the school, will have eight girls and eight boys teams from the same eight schools.
Scheduled to play are Fuquay-Varina, North Raleigh Christian, Nash Central, Southern Nash, Rolesville, West Johnston, Clayton and the host Rams.
Play will being at 10 a.m. each day. Championship games are at 7 (girls) and 8:30 p.m. (boys) on Tuesday, Dec. 30.
Christ is state’s No. 2 ranked runner: West Johnston senior Kyle Christ is the No. 2 ranked boys cross country runner in the state by nc.milesplit.com after his runner-up finish in the adidas XC Challenge earlier this month. Christ finished in 15 minutes, 23.9 seconds, which is the second lowest boys cross country 5K time in the state this season. The XC Challenge was the fastest boys race as a whole this season with six of the top 11 times of the season coming in the race.

Christ’s time also earned him Milesplit National Elite gold status.
Hammer leads scoring in county golf matches: Neuse Charter School’s Makenna Hammer had the lowest scoring average in the Johnston County girls golf matches. She posted a scoring average of 39 for nine holes.
Clayton’s Haley Talton and Peyton Labonte of Corinth Holders both averaged scores of 42 in the matches. SSS’s Parker Watson was fifth with a 44 average.
Amateur golf notables: Garner’s Chris Buffaloe tied for 21st in the 21st N.C. Mid-Amateur Championship at Old Chatham Golf Club on Sept. 21. The Garner resident posted a score of 223 (7-over) in the 54-hole event.
Randy Robbins of Smithfield posted the winning low net score in the Tarheel Seniors Tournament at Lochmere Golf Club on Sept. 22. Robbins had a winning score of 68 in the championship flight.
Clayton’s Steve Naum led the way in the third flight low net competition with a 63.
