State Games High School Baseball Showcase
The Powerade State Games High School Baseball Showcase will take place June 17-21 at the USA Baseball Complex, N.C. State University, Duke University and UNC Chapel Hill. The High School Baseball Showcase pits the best 20 underclassmen players from eight North Carolina regions against each other to battle it out in front of over 80 college and professional scouts for the gold, silver and bronze medals. Only high school underclassmen (2016-18 graduates) are eligible to participate. JUSA High School Girls Tryouts
Tryouts for the Johnston United Soccer Association’s 16U-up teams will be held April 25-26 from 3-5 p.m. at Clayton Middle School. Register for the tryout online at www.jusasoccer.org.
Free MLB Pitch, Hit and Run Competition
A free Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit & Run will be held from 9-11 a.m. on Saturday, April 18, at Clayton Community Park Field No. 3. Boys and girls (competing separately) in ages 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, 13-14 (as of July 17) will have the opportunity to compete in the first of four levels of competition. 2015 Clayton Road Race
The Clayton 5K Road Race will be held Saturday, May 9, at 9 a.m. Register by May 5 for just $20 or $30 thereafter. Race day registration is from 7:30 until 8:30 a.m. The tot trot fee for ages 6 and under is $5. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in six age groups. Ribbons go to all of the participants in the 0.1-mile tot trot. Registration forms are available online, the Clayton Community Center, Town hall and the Hocutt-Ellington Library. The race begins and ends at Town Hall.
State Wiffle Ball Tournament

Trojan Challenge 5K moved to May 16
South Johnston High School has changed the dates of the Trojan Challenge 5K, a 5K obstacle course run. The event will now be held on May 16 at 9 a.m. on the school campus. The entry fee is $15 or $10 for students. Funds will benefit the South Johnston track and field programs. Clayton Football Camp
The Clayton football camps will be held at Clayton High School June 22-23 from 8:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. daily for ages 6-8 and June 24-25 from 8:30 a.m. until 11 a.m. daily for ages 9-12. The cost is $40. The camp will include members of the Clayton High School coaching staff and be led by Randy Pinkowski. Registration forms are available in the Clayton High School main office.
Red Cross Lifeguard Training
Four sessions of American Red Cross Lifeguard Training will be held at the Smithfield Recreation and Aquatics Center. Participants must be at least 15 years old, pass a pre-course swim test and attend all class sessions in full. The pre-course swim test includes a 300-yard swim with rhythmic breathing and breath control using freestyle or the breaststroke, a two-minute water tread using only your legs, and a distance swim after retrieving a brick in nine feet of water. The fee for the pre-course is $25. The class fee is $175-200. Classes are set for four days (including 20 hours of instruction) April 26 - May 3 and May 11-17. Sessions cannont be mixed. Clayton Cheerleading Camp
The Clayton cheerleading camp will be held at Clayton High School June 22-25 from 9 a.m. until noon daily. The cost is $50 before June 1 or $65 thereafter. 5K race training
Flowers Plantation’s Spring Couch to 5K will help participants train for a 5K race in a fun and supportive group. 2015 Horse Show Series
The Johnston County Horse Show Series offers fun and exciting shows while still maintaining a down home atmosphere that encourages family participation. The shows, mostly held at the Johnston County Livestock Arena near Smithfield, are open shows that welcome riders and horses/mules from all riding levels, breeds and disciplines. JCHSS offers classes in Halter, Western, Working Western, Hunters & Jumping, Dressage Suitability, Trail, Miniature equines, Driving and English. Classes are placed through eighth place with 21 championship divisions per show. Show dates for 2015 are April 11, May 31, June 27, Sept. 19, Oct. 31 and Nov. 14. A three-day show is also set for Aug. 7-9 at the Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh. A negative coggins test within one year is required. Tarheel Seniors Golf Association
