The lineups for the 2015 N.C. Coaches Association East-West All-Star Games featuring some of the state’s top stars from the class of 2015 have been completed and three more local athletes have been added to the lineup.
Garner’s Julius Barnes has been named to the boys East basketball squad. Barnes led the Trojans to the NCHSAA 4A state championship in March, picking up MVP honors in the state title game.
He averaged 14.7 points, 6.7 assists and 2.7 steals per game during his senior season.
Barnes will be joined by local stars Chris Clemons and Rob Brown of Millbrook as well as Kinston’s Brandon Ingram, a Duke recruit, on the East squad.
The game is set for Monday, July 20, in the Greensboro Coliseum.
Rob Maloney of D.H. Conley and Larry Edwards of Southeast Halifax will coach the East squad.
The girls All-Star East squad will also feature Southeast Raleigh’s Amber Richardson, an N.C. State recruit. Richardson led Southeast to back-to-back 4A state championship game appearances as a junior and a senior.
She will be coached by Clayton coach Marlon Lee, who is the assistant coach to Durham Hillside’s Ovester Grays.
The girls All-Star Game is also July 20 at the Greensboro Coliseum.
Also suiting up in an East All-Stars uniform will be Corinth Holders girls soccer standout Bella Iorio. Iorio, a UNC Asheville signee,
She helped lead Corinth Holders to a 15-0 regular season record this past season and the Two Rivers 3A Conference championship.
She finished the season with 20 goals and 11 assists, leading the Pirates in both categories. Iorio totaled 56 goals and 47 assists in her four-year career at Corinth Holders.
The All-Star soccer game will be played Tuesday, July 21, at the UNC Greensboro soccer stadium.
The All-Star football game, which features six area players and West Johnston coach Jimmy Williams leading the East coaching staff, is July 22 at Jamieson Stadium on the campus of Grimsley High School in Greensboro.
Lacrosse honors for Clayton players: Several players for club lacrosse teams featuring players from the area earned individual honors recently.
Caleb Surom of the Clayton High club team was named the first team goalie in N.C. High School Club Lacrosse. Attacker Ben Ferez of Clayton picked up honorable mention recognition.
Seven players earned all-conference honors in the Wake Lacrosse Conference for middle schools: Cam Snow, Ryan Veach, Drew Applequist, Grant Cartledge, Colin Gregan, Grayson Gall and Tucker Kontir.
Golf notables: Mike Dillon of Clayton was the low gross winner in the first flight of the Tarheel Seniors Golf Association tournament at Falls Village Golf Club this past week. Dillon carded a round of 80.
Steve Wirth, also of Clayton, was third in the championship low net division (69) and Dave Marconi of Clayton was the third flight low net runner-up (71).
