Summer high school leagues begin play this week across the area. The leagues are instructional, near pick up games, often played at doubleheaders beginning at 4 p.m.
Johnston County Instructional League teams this year will be Clayton, Cleveland, West Johnston and South Johnston.
Games are played from Monday through Thursday. Doubleheaders begin at 4 p.m. Single games begin at 5 p.m. Those four teams will also play games against teams from Wake Forest, Knightdale and Rolesville.
Garner is in the Central Carolina Scholastic Summer League and starts play on June 15.
Stephenson qualifies for N.C. Amateur: South Johnston High School junior Patrick Stephenson claimed a spot in the 55th N.C. Amateur Championship by tying for third place at a qualifier at Chapel Ridge in Pittsboro on Thursday.
Stephenson played in the U.S. Amateur last summer and was the runner-up in the N.C. High School Athletic Association’s 3A state championship earlier this spring. He finished at 3-under-par 69 for the qualifying round.
Garner’s Scott Freeman missed out on a berth by two strokes, tying for 26th. He shot a 75.
Clayton’s David Germann has already qualified for the N.C. Amateur, which will be played June 18-21 in Wilmington at the Landfall Nicklaus course.
Dutch continues to blaze: A week after winning the 400-meter hurdle title at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon in his best time ever, Clayton native Johnny Dutch ran the 400-meter hurdles in 48.13 seconds in at the Golden Gala IAFF Diamond League meet in Rome on Thursday.
Dutch nipped world No. 1 Bershawm Jackson to win the Pre title in 48.22 seconds.
The next big in-country meet on Dutch’s schedule will be the USA Track and Field National Outdoor Championships June 25-28 in Eugene, Oregon, the same site where the Prefontaine Classic was held.
