The N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission will host an Introduction to Falconry workshop, presented by the N.C. Falconers Guild, Aug. 22 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its Centennial Campus Center for Wildlife Education in Raleigh. Falconry is hunting by means of a bird of prey, with strict state and federal requirements in place for owning a raptor and hunting with it. Participants at the workshop will learn about raptor identification, anatomy and care of raptors, the history of falconry, bird training and falconry equipment. Trained raptors will be on hand. A $35 advance registration fee covers the workshop and lunch. Space is limited. The minimum age for participation is 12 and anyone younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Sprint Triathlon in Johnston
The Club at Flowers Plantation will host a spring triathlon on Sept. 20. The event includes a 300-yard swim, a 16-mile bike ride and a 5K run. The entry fee is $75 for individuals before Sept. 17 or $130 for relay groups before Sept. 17. Proceeds benefit the Ronald McDonald House of Durham. 2015 Horse Show Series
The Johnston County Horse Show Series offers fun and exciting shows while still maintaining a down home atmosphere that encourages family participation. The shows, mostly held at the Johnston County Livestock Arena near Smithfield, are open shows that welcome riders and horses/mules from all riding levels, breeds and disciplines. JCHSS offers classes in Halter, Western, Working Western, Hunters & Jumping, Dressage Suitability, Trail, Miniature equines, Driving and English. Classes are placed through eighth place with 21 championship divisions per show. The remaining show dates for 2015 are Sept. 19, Oct. 31 and Nov. 14. A three-day show is also set for Aug. 7-9 at the Hunt Horse Complex in Raleigh. A negative coggins test within one year is required. Tarheel Seniors Golf Association
The Tarheel Seniors Golf Association will hold 16 events this year across the area this spring and summer with events at The Neuse, River Ridge, Falls Village, Bentwinds, 12 Oaks, Zebulon Country Club, Lochmere, Devils Ridge and Eagle Ridge. 30 and Over Basketball League
The Garner Parks and Recreation Department will offer a 30-and-older basketball league beginning in September. Teams will be randomly divided on Thursday, Sept. 3 — the night of the league meeting at the Avery Street Recreation Center. Online registration ends Sept. 3 at 7 p.m. In-person registration (with a valid ID) will be accepted at the league meeting.
