Conference championship season has begun across the area for the winter sports season. The Two Rivers 3A Conference were scheduled to hold (weather permitting) their swimming championships Friday night in Smithfield and the Greater Neuse River 4A holds its swimming finals this coming Friday.
A day later (Jan. 30), individual conference champions in wrestling will be decided in the four area conferences. Winter track and field meets in the Two Rivers 3A and Carolina 1A conferences will be held Feb. 3. (The GNRC does not have a conference championship meet during winter track.)
If the winter weather holds off (unlike last year when conference tournaments were wiped out), conference basketball tournaments begin across the area on Feb. 15.
State playoffs start on Feb. 2 in dual wrestling, then Feb. 23 in basketball.
Princeton christens Sugg Court: Princeton named its basketball court, “Coach Raymond Sugg Court” Thursday night during its games against James Kenan in honor of a man who has done almost everything one could do in a town. Sugg was born in Princeton in 1923, starred in athletics there, served in World War II, returned to Princeton and coached championship teams at the school, founded the Princeton Little League, the town’s youth sports organization, and continues to be one of the biggest Bulldog fans there is.
“With all of his accomplishments Mr. Raymond is one of the most humble and endearing persons you will ever meet,” said Princeton athletics director Marty Gurganus. “He has a genuine love for young people and his presence alone is an encouragement to each of us to not only give our very best in sports but more importantly in life.
“He has set the standard high for each of us who have followed in his footsteps and it is our honor to name our court after him.”
