Orange County arrests man in motel shooting

The Orange County Sheriff’s Office has charged a man with critically wounding a woman Wednesday at the Scottish Inn on U.S. 70 near the Durham County line.

Shenandoah Freeman, 40, of Durham County, was charged Wednesday with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. He was moved Thursday from the Wake County Detention Center, where he was being held under $450,000 secured bail, to the Durham County jail.

The victim, Amber Leigh Gottschalk, 27, of Durham County, was taken to Duke Hospital, where she was listed in critical condition. The hospital does not provide public updates when a patient is the victim of a violent crime.

Deputies responded to a 911 call about the shooting around 4:50 p.m. Wednesday in the motel parking lot. They found Gottschalk lying in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds.

The suspect fled before deputies arrived, according to reports. Using evidence and witness statements collected at the scene, however, investigators were able to seek a warrant for Freeman’s arrest.

In an unrelated traffic stop, Raleigh police arrested Freeman later Wednesday and charged him with a warrant out of Durham County. Freeman is facing kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury charges in Durham. Gottschalk also was the victim in that May 9 incident, the sheriff’s office reported.

Freeman was charged with the Orange County shooting while being held at the Wake County Detention Center.

The N.C. Department of Correction website shows Freeman has a record of traffic and drug-related offenses dating to 1994. He was last released from the Wayne County Correctional Center in 2002.
