Man charged in May homicide
DURHAM Police have arrested and charged a Durham man with a fatal shooting that reportedly sent a vehicle crashing into a house.
Alexis Hernandez Ramirez, 21, is charged with the first-degree murder of the vehicle’s driver, Juan Carlos Ruiz.
Officers were summoned to the 2700 block of Holloway Street near South Adams Street on May 25 after a vehicle crashed into a house there. Ruiz, 27, of Durham, was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound. Three passengers in the vehicle were injured and hospitalized, according to police.
A preliminary investigation showed shots were fired from another vehicle into the victims’ vehicle. On Tuesday, investigators arrested Ramirez on Ivy Street, according to police.
Speed, alcohol blamed in fatal crash
DURHAM One man was killed and another critically injured early Monday when their car went into a turn too fast on a ramp from U.S. 15-501 to Martin Luther King Jr. Parkway, went airborne and crashed into a Jersey barrier, police said.
The crash closed MLK Parkway between University Drive and U.S. 15-501 as well as the exit from northbound 15-501 to MLK.
Franco Juan Sanchez, 33, was driving the 2002 Subaru when it crashed about 3:45 a.m. and died at the scene, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said.
Edward Frye Mitchell III, 24, of Durham was a passenger and was taken to Duke Hospital.
Crash investigators determined that alcohol and speed both contributed to the accident, Michael said.
