A 37-year-old former school teacher has been charged with felony counts of sexual offense with a student and taking indecent liberties with a student at Jordan High School in 2012.

Michelle Smith White, of Penrith Drive, was charged Wednesday with one count each of sexual offense involving a student and taking indecent liberties with a female student while White was a teacher at Jordan High School in 2012, Durham County sheriff’s spokesman Deputy Paul Sherwin said Monday.

The student was 15 at the time, Sherwin said.

White resigned from the Durham Public Schools in April, Sherwin said.

She was released the same day she was charged on $6,000 bail and has a court date of Aug. 6, according to jail and court records.

Sherwin said the case is still open, and detectives believe there will be further charges. The sheriff’s office asked anyone with information about the case to call the criminal investigations division at 919-560-0880.

Schools officials say they are cooperating.

“The allegations against this teacher are very serious, and all of us from the school leadership to district administration will continue to do everything we can to support the Durham Sheriff’s Office in their investigation,” Durham Public Schools spokeswoman Marcia Pearson said.

“The physical and emotional safety of our students is our No. 1 priority,” Pearson said.
