The Durham County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help in the investigation of a father and son found fatally shot Friday.
Deputies found Dewayne Greer Sr., 51, and Dewayne Greer Jr., 18, inside a house at 3703 Angier Ave., around 3 p.m. Friday after a neighbor called 911 expressing concern about the two men being “passed out or something,” according to the call.
The woman called 911 at the request of her landlord, Larry Jones, who owns the house the men were found in.
Jones, who owns Piedmont Insulation, said he had known Dewayne Greer Sr. about three years and that he had done carpentry and sheet metal work for him on and off for about a year.
Dewayne Greer Sr. asked Jones about four months ago whether he and his son could stay at the house, but they hadn’t paid the rent or the electric bill since moving in, Jones said.
Dewayne Greer Sr. had been building a porch for Jones’ friend in Granville County. It was unusual when one of Jones’ employees noticed the vehicle that Dewayne Greer Sr. was using was still in the driveway Friday morning.
“If he had something to do and some place to go to work, he would be there,” Jones said.
Jones’ employee stopped by the house and saw the two men inside, one in a chair and one on the floor, but they didn’t move when he knocked on the door.
Jones told the employee to let them sleep.
He went to the house Friday afternoon. He looked through the window and saw the men not moving, despite the dog barking in the house.
“I knew something was wrong,” he said.
Dewayne Greer Jr. was charged with felony breaking and entering in Granville County in 2013, but was convicted of misdemeanor larceny, according to court records. In March 2015, he was charged in Durham County with felony hit and run involving a serious injury or death, but was convicted of failure to give information and aid an injured person.
