A Triangle native has the lead role in “Wicked,” which comes to the Durham Performing Arts Center starting Jan. 7.
Laurel Harris, who plays Elphaba, was born in Durham and grew up and cut her theatrical teeth in Raleigh, at Enloe High School and with Raleigh Little Theatre and Theatre in the Park. She and her husband met while performing in RLT’s holiday classic, “Cinderella.” Harris is also an alumna of Theatre in the Park’s “A Christmas Carol.”
“I still call Raleigh ‘home’ even though my husband and I are based out of NYC,” Harris writes. “Both our families still live there, several of our friends, all our childhood memories and where we just got married!”
“Wicked” is the story of the witches of Oz. Harris got her start in the musical three years ago as an understudy. She also was an understudy in the Broadway production of “Evita.”
Never miss a local story.
“Wicked” will be at DPAC for two dozen performances, through Jan. 25. DPAC is at 123 Vivian St.
