Your letters, March 26

Disturbing views

Regarding the news article “Graham praises Putin” (N&O, March 19)

As a retired mental health clinician of over 40 years, I am stunned and outraged by Franklin Graham’s assertions equating homosexuality with pedophilia. There is absolutely no scientific evidence to support that gay men or lesbians are any more likely to sexually abuse children than are heterosexual men or women.

What is truly shameful is Graham’s disturbing views on an equality issue. It is sad that a person of his stature and position would voice such inappropriate condemnation.

Misusing authority

Franklin Graham is misusing his religious authority to present a twisted interpretation of Christian teachings that promotes hatred, endangers our gay brothers and sisters and gives North Carolina a bad name as a place of intolerance and bigotry.

I am a Christian minister, and I support President Obama and the attorney general in their efforts to make federal laws apply to every American equally, as the Constitution guarantees.

I know eventually we will look back and be amazed that there were pastors who openly questioned the rights of gay Americans. I hope it is soon enough to give Graham an opportunity to repent and ask forgiveness.
