Durham Mardi Gras 2016 is in the books! We hope it was a successful night for everybody and that all of you have memories of many special moments.
When Durham Mardi Gras first became an “official” organization, we knew that Durham was enthusiastic about this event. Everything that we are and everything that we do is the result of that excitement, so we want to take a moment and thank some of those involved. This is, and always will be, an incomplete list, because the success of this event is the result of every single person that told a friend, re-tweeted a picture, put on a tutu, or simply showed up and enjoyed the fun.
All of the venues involved have helped in some way, and we encourage you to show your thanks to them throughout the year by stopping in for a beer, meal, or show. They include: Motorco, Blue Note Grill, Fullsteam, The Pit and The Bar. We can’t tell you how thankful we are that all of these venues are willing to be a part of our celebrations.
The city of Durham has been so welcoming and helpful in the planning. They were incredibly flexible last year, with our last-minute weather cancellation, and again this year, by helping us negotiate the changes in parade permit rules. We appreciate everything they do for us!
We want to thank our volunteers, who put forth so much time in helping to manage, advertise and decorate, as well as standing in the cold to make sure the parade ran on time and on the correct path.
Krewes are the heart of Durham Mardi Gras and we hope that, in the future, this is an event that grows through the imagination and efforts of individual krewes.
We would also like to thank the donors who graciously gave to help keep Durham Mardi Gras free on Mardi Gras night. Particularly Acme Plumbing, who was our first Patron de la Fete and Abita Beer, who helped spread the word with their events throughout Durham. SpeeDeeQue Printing responded to our last-minute printing needs keeping Durham plastered in DMG posters.
And, we mustn’t forget all of our amazing bands!
All of our bands have joined in the festivities with open hearts since we’ve begun. For detailed lists of all the bands, have a look at our websitedurhammardigras.com/ under previous celebrations – there are too many to list here. However...
A special shout-out goes to the Beauty Operators who have joined up with Durham Mardi Gras in one form or another since 2013, in our fundraisers or for the main event, playing a crucial role in building our tradition by donating their time and pizazz. Keep an eye out on Facebook for their shows – they are not to be missed.
And lastly, we thank all of the Bulltown Strutters. The Bulltown Strutters are from whom this entire event in its current form has taken root. Not only do the Bulltown Strutters channel the New Orleans vibe year round in Durham, but they have graciously donated their time, energy and joy freely to our humble event ... every single show. Without them, there is no Durham Mardi Gras.
Thank you to everybody, and we look forward to seeing you all out on Feb. 28, 2017. You can start spreading the word, now!
