Riverside High School kept itself in the drivers’ seat of the PAC-6 baseball race with last week’s 5-0 victory against Jordan.
Left-hander Will Hibbard (6-0) pitched a 2-hitter for the Pirates – striking out 10 Falcons before being relived in the sixth inning by Blake Morgan – to help Riverside improve to 15-3 overall this season and 7-0 against PAC-6 competition.
Their win kept the Pirates a full game ahead of longtime rival Northern (8-11, 6-2), which beat Hillside 8-1 on Friday.
It also snapped a two-game win mini-streak for Jordan (4-15, 3-5), which had beaten East Chapel Hill 4-2 and Hillside 13-3 in the Falcon’s two preceding games.
Friday’s game made “2” the magic number for Riverside. Any combination of two total Pirate wins and/or Northern losses would give the season’s championship to Riverside, and with it the conference’s No. 1 seed in the upcoming state playoffs.
Riverside had a chance to lock up the 2014 PAC-6 title with games Monday at Roxboro Person (6-12, 3-5) and at Hillside (4-11, 0-8).
Regardless, the matter will be settled after the Knights and Pirates meet Thursday in the last game of the regular season.
