Hustvedt wins flight at CGA tournament

Kent Hustvedt of Durham carded a 79 Sunday at Bryan Park Golf Club and won his flight at the Carolinas Golf Association’s One-Day Tournament in Browns Summit. Durham’s Danny Bailey was two spots back in the B Flight, shooting an 83 for third place. Thomas Bernard came in at 91 for 25th place overall.

OCS race cancelled

Orange County Speedway canceled last Saturday’s stock car racing at the three-eighth-mile track in Rougemont, where thunderstorms threatened the area all night.

That shifts local racing’s focus to the next OCS events, scheduled for July 12.

Movin’ on from high school to Division I

Emanuel McGirt’s verbal commitment recently to North Carolina means that he’ll be re-united with former Hillside teammate Khris Francis in 2015. McGirt, at 6-feet-6 and 275 pounds, is a rising senior offensive tackle for Hillside. Francis helped Hillside win a state championship before matriculating at UNC last year.

McGirt reportedly received approximately 15 Football Bowl Subdivision scholarship offers, including LSU, Florida, N.C. State, Duke, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.

Other Hillside football commitments this year included: Kalen McCain (N.C. State); Donte Thomas-Williams (West Virginia) and Trevion Thompson (Clemson).

Davanzo heads to Mallard Creek

Former Jordan wrestling coach Phil Davanzo has been named the new athletic director at Charlotte Mallard Creek. Davanzo was one of six Falcon coaches to leave their positions. He coached wrestling for nine years.

Whirlwinds undefeated after four meets

Woodcroft won an important Durham Summer Swim League showdown last week at the Duke Faculty Club, 259-187, to stay undefeated in dual meets this season. Triple event-winners for the Whirlwinds (4-0) included Erik Thorson, Camden McGovern, Jenna Maloy, Jay Baker, Adam Cocke and Stephen Young.

Other Division I winners in the fourth week of DSSL meets included Hope Valley Country Club 233-205 over Eno Valley and Parkwood 262-170 over Fairfield.

In Division II, Treyburn won a nail-biter against visiting Garrett Farms 209-208, and Hope Valley Farms won 262-134 against Vance Aquatics. In Division II, Croasdaile won 230-182 in a meet at Five Oaks, and Homestead Height won 286-132 at home against Levin JCC.
