Hillside’s Brown wins national title
Hillside High junior McKinley Brown won his first national indoor crown in the 55-meter hurdles on the final day of competition at the USATF Hershey National Youth Indoor Championships in Landover, Md.
Competing as a member of Durham’s Run U Xpress Track Club at the March 15 event, Brown won with a time of 7.94 seconds. He also finished sixth (51.4) in the 400 meters finals.
Cody Brown, also competing with the Xpress club, won the 11-12 boys 400 meters in 59.36. He also helped the club’s 4x200 relay team – Brown, Kailen Perry, Kyle Lipscomb, Tharon Adkins – take a second place (1:50.84) in the national meet.

Xpress member Ty’ania Gray took second place in the girls 11-12 shot put with a mark of 9.7 meters.
Jonathan Avery of Durham, who runs for Cary Academy but competed unattached at the nationals, won the 17-18 boys 200 meters with a time of 22.69 seconds. He also finished second (6.60 seconds) in the 55-meters sprint, just seven-hundredths of a second behind winner Brenen Garrett (6.53) of Maryland.
Skeeter 5K results
Victor Ornelas (18:54) and Tyler Johnson (20:49), both of Durham, were the first two people across the line at last Saturday’s Skeeter Run 5K in southern Durham. Davey Pitard (21:12) of Burlington was third.
Onyinye Iweala (26:13) of Durham was the top female finisher, while Caroline Ornelas (27:00) was second and Jennifer Salamh (28:05) third among the female entrants.
Pitard also had the best time for any under-19 runner, while Taylor Davis, 16, of Roxboro (34:53) was the top female teen.
Northern HOF banquet
The Northern Hall of Fame Banquet, preceded by a golf tournament, will be April 25 at 6 p.m. at the Croasdaile Country Club. Last year’s banquet raised over $6,500 last year for the high school’s athletic program.
