Blazing heads to Pan Am games
Former Blue Devil defender Stefanie Fee and current goalkeeper Lauren Blazing will look to help the United States women’s national field hockey team gain qualification to the 2016 Olympic Games at the Pan American Games, which kick off this week in Toronto.
“On behalf of myself and the entire Duke field hockey family, I would like to congratulate both Lauren Blazing and Stef Fee on their selection to represent USA field hockey at the Pan American Games,” said Duke head coach Pam Bustin. “The Pan American Games have been an important tournament for U.S. field hockey for decades, as the champion of the North and South American continents will then represent this region at the Olympic Games.”
Opening ceremonies for the Pan American Games are set for Friday, July 10, followed by the first round of women’s field hockey matches Monday, July 13. Team USA will compete in Pool B for the tournament along with Chile, Cuba and Uruguay, while Argentina, Canada, the Dominican Republic and Mexico comprise Pool B.
The women’s quarterfinals will take place July 20, the semifinals July 22 and the finals on July 24. All men’s and women’s field hockey contests will be held at the Pan Am/Parapan Am Fields in Toronto.
Blazing, a graduate of Durham Academy, was added to the Pan American Games roster as a backup goalkeeper. She previously represented the U.S. at the 2013 Junior World Cup and the 2012 Junior Pan American Games.
“Lauren has represented the U.S. in two major U21 tournaments over the past two years and has regularly trained amongst our senior national team players,” Bustin said. “Her efforts to be a part of the senior routine and to adhere to her elite training, even when away from the national group, has prepared her for this fantastic opportunity. Her athleticism and goal keeping abilities make her a strong addition to the U.S. squad.”
