Independence Day will be celebrated all day long in Eastern Wake County, starting in Wendell in the morning and ending with fireworks at Knightdale Station Park and the Carolina Mudcats stadium at night.
A Title IX advocacy group has ranked North Carolina 44th in the nation in “gender equity gaps” in sports participation. The National Women’s Law Center says almost half of North Carolina’s public high schools are not providing girls enough spots on sports teams.
While school is out, many eastern Wake children miss out on the free and reduced lunches their families come to depend on. Last year, Community Helpers leader Billy Neal began offering prepared meals at lunchtime Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays at their First Avenue office.
