After a month of collecting suggestions for a new mobile app, the town of Wendell has landed on the official name: Tell Wendell.

The town accepted possible names through its website and Facebook, Wendell’s IT Administrator, Tamah Hughes said.

Town staff gathered the suggestions, had an internal vote and then presented two options to residents at the Fourth of July celebration for a final vote.

“We had a lot of good names (but) we wanted it to be small enough to fit on all things,” Hughes said of some of the criteria that guided staff’s decision.

Hughes said residents suggested plenty of good names, but it was important to find one that would fit on mobile device screens. The town discarded longer names like “Wendell Watching Together” and “Forward Thinking Citizens.”

Ultimately, voters could choose between “Tell Wendell” and “Wendell Listens.” In the end, “Wendell Listens” received 75 votes and “Tell Wendell” got 90.

“We’re very excited that they made a choice,” Hughes said.

She will be working this week to finalize the styling of the name for the company building the app, PublicStuff.

The app will allow residents to report any problems they may be experiencing in the town, like a problem with trash pickup. Residents can already do that online, but Hughes said the app makes it a little more convenient.

The town hopes to have the $3,000 app ready for download on phones and tablets by mid to late August. The app will work with both iPhones and Android phones.
