Even though it’s still winter, the Town of Knightdale has started thinking about summer as it plans for the new YMCA Aquatics Center.
Last week, Knightdale planning staff presented visuals that showed the layout of the new center, an outdoor swimming facility that’s expected to open by Memorial Day 2015.
According to the presentation, the pool isn’t the only thing the Aquatics Center will feature. There will also be a pool house with offices, space for lifeguards and restrooms for swimmers, plus a Kid’s Camp building with separate restrooms for younger swimmers.
The town will provide 125 parking spaces at the park to handle Aquatics Center parking and the YMCA will create 71 spaces by way of a parking lot for the main building.
The pool will be like other YMCA facilities and Knightdale residents will have to become a member of the YMCA to access the pool.
The town is also considering the addition of a water slide, although that feature is dependent on the budget.
The construction of the Aquatics Center will include a 10-foot path that will connect it with the town’s greenway system.
The outdoor aquatics center is the first phase of the Knightdale YMCA construction that will be built as part of the upcoming Knightdale Station subdivision, which is just north of the new Knightdale Station Park.
The pool and deck area will be about 23,000 square feet and the entirety of the aquatics center will take up about three acres. The entire YMCA facility will take up about eight acres out of the subdivision’s 270 acres.
Still working on building details
The actual YMCA building will be privately funded.
In September, Tony Campione, the YMCA’s regional vice president for northern Wake County, said YMCA facilities can run anywhere from $3 to $8 million, depending on what the community needs.
Preston Development, the company overseeing the Knightdale Station project, has already donated $1 million to the YMCA.
The YMCA’s aquatic center will be the first of several amenities to be constructed as part of Knightdale Station.
The 835-home subdivision will begin building homes within the next month or two, but there are also plans for retail space in later phases of the project.
Thales Academy, a Triangle private school system, will also have an elementary school located within Knightdale Station and developers will leave room for the school to expand in the future.
The subdivision will be built in phases over several years to accommodate demand.
