After about three years of work and combining personal stories and photos, former Knightdale mayor Billy Wilder and longtime resident Wanda Ramm will release their book, “Images of America: Knightdale” on March 31.
The book was published by Arcadia Publishing, a national company that specializes in publishing books on the history of towns. “Knightdale” will be distributed locally, although Arcadia Marketing Assistant Erin Owens said some towns, depending on readers’ interest, do have books that are distributed nationally.
Andrea Pearlstein, Adult Services Manager at the East Regional Library said Wilder and Ramm’s book is the first about the town by locals that she knows of. The library will stock 10 copies of the book for check-out once it is officially released.
The book is a compilation of Wilder and Ramm’s personal photos and stories, as well as information from the Knightdale Historical Society. The Society is a group of longtime Knightdale residents who work to document and share the history of the town.
Through pictures, it details the beginnings of Knightdale, including some of the earliest residents. It shows major events in the town’s history, like becoming its own town recognized by the state and the devastating fire downtown in 1940.
The book also shows an issue of Knightdale’s first community newspaper, “The Knightdale Knews,” from 1943. The paper only lasted through the end of World War II.
The East Regional Library will host an event April 14 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with Wilder and Ramm, who will be there to sign and sell copies of “Images of America: Knightdale.”
On May 15, Ramm and Wilder will speak to the Wendell Historical Society.
The book will be available to purchase through amazon.com or aracadiapublishing.com.
