The Knightdale Business Alliance held its annual Community Awards Ceremony May 1 in the auditorium at Knightdale High School. The ceremony honored 18 students and nine teachers.
The students were honored in the following award categories: the Active Learner award, sponsored by GAMMS Unlimited, recognized students who demonstrated independent thinking skills, and a love for learning: Makalia Berry, Brian Gyamfi, Juan Daniel, Maciel Jaimes and Rae'Dawn Woodberry.
The Community Service award, sponsored by the Town of Knightdale and Doug Boyd Enterprises, recognized students who demonstrated commitment to the community by participating in variety of community service activities: Noemi Perez, Brieanna Salmon, Kayla Turner and Shelly Guo.
The Environmental Awareness award, sponsored by the Knightdale Academy of Environmental Studies, recognized students who demonstrated leadership, personal growth and career success through environmental education: Jimena Herrera, Flavia Ledesma, Andre Ray and Jarred Taylor.

The Public Safety award, sponsored by the Knightdale Academy of Public Safety, recognized Joshua Cooper for demonstrating leadership and involvement with the public safety academy, and volunteerism in the area of public safety.
The Student Excellence award, sponsored by Sigma Health Services, recognized students who demonstrated leadership, and academic excellence: Wendy Espinoza, Kimberly Mohammed, Maxwell Neill and Meredith Roach.
Carla Jernigan-Baker, principal of Knightdale High, presented the First Year Teacher award to Jeremiah Retzlaff. All teacher awards were sponsored by Sigma Health Services.
Other teacher awards included the Business Partnership award presented by Christopher Smith to Gayle Alford, Tameka Almond, Joyce Ellis and Anna Gay. The Innovations in Teaching award was given to Jeffrey Deal, Jason deNobel, Chaurita Dawson-Herring and Clair Wilson.
