The town’s park will be transformed into an athletic warzone on April 18 for the Ninja Warrior Dash 5K.
Kathe Schaecher and Allison Klepchick, co-captains of the “Pirates of the CURE-ibbean” Relay for Life team, are transforming their love of grueling Spartan races to create an obstacle course for all ages.
There will be up to eight obstacles, including a mud crawl, a four- and eight-foot wall, a tire flip and a zombie chase on the 3.2-mile course
“We are a little obsessed with Spartan races,” Schaecher said. “We love doing our Relay for Life events and getting them bigger and crazier.”
All of the money raised for the event will go toward cancer research.
“We hope everyone enjoys it and gets some knowledge of fitness, American Cancer Society and what 5Ks are all about,” she said. “People are so scared of them. Anybody can do it. In this particular one we’re making sure a 10-year-old can do it or a 50-year-old can do it.
“You can walk it you don’t have to run it.”
Schaecher is hoping for up to 200 participants, and although she says dozens of people have signed waivers, only a handful have registered. She’s hoping for more registrations and some volunteer zombies.
Registration cost is $35 per person or $30 per person for teams of four or more. The first 150 to register will receive a sport bag and t-shirt along with their racing bib.
To volunteer or register, contact Schaecher and Klepchick at 919-365-8080 or visit the event Facebook page: Wendell Ninja Warrior 5K.
