On Saturday, May 2, rain or shine, the East Wake Middle School campus will transform into fairgrounds for the largest Parent-Teacher Association fundraiser the school has sponsored yet.
Rebecca Raper, a PTA board member and math teacher who is heading up the event, said the goal of the school’s first community day is to “put the ‘fun’ back in fundraiser.”
The school’s PTA wanted to move beyond the little fundraisers like pizza and magazine subscriptions.
And with more than a dozen attractions, “we’re going to go big or go home,” she said.
Funds raised from sponsors, vendor booths and ticket sales will contribute toward updated technology for the school, Raper said.
Raper said with the school’s unique challenges of a rural location and pushing for more parental and community involvement, the weekend event will ideally bring out whole families from within and outside the eastern Wake community.
She is specifically aiming for elementary school families to visit the area’s only year-round middle school and also a special focus on Latino families.
Starting at 8 a.m. with a 5K circling the school and a 9 a.m. fun run for all ages and abilities, the event will also host a smorgasbord of food trucks, educational activities, an international fair and campus tours for rising sixth graders and their parents.
In addition to a competitive educational fair with students representing projects in their favorite subjects, the day will also feature 32 vendors, inflatables and carnival games hosted by the National Junior Honor Society – including a dunking booth that will feature the administration.
There will also be a Loteria – bingo in Spanish – and Spanish interpreters to assist with workshops for parents that include learning programs to check on their children’s grades and assignments.
“It will be a family day, a bonding day,” Raper said. She has organized similar events previously.
