The city is warning residents to be aware of individuals who are posing as imposter Raleigh public utility employees to gain entry into homes.
Recently, the department received notice that such imposters attempted to enter a home in the Rolesville area to apparently complete water sampling tasks, according to a Raleigh public utilities department press release.
All employees in the department carry photo identification and voluntarily present it when approaching homeowners. Their vehicles will bear the Raleigh city seal with the department name and vehicle number prominently displayed. City workers often wear uniforms or shirts with the City of Raleigh seal and department name.
They do not arrive unannounced or request a sample without initiation by the homeowner.
According to the city, private companies soliciting residents by placing water sampling door hangers has increased, and is not endorsed by the City of Raleigh.
The city asks residents within the service area to be diligent and always ask for identification from anyone on your property. Residents should immediately contact the City of Raleigh Public Utilities Department at 919-996-4540 or the Police Department at 911 to report someone posing as a department employee or someone tampering with a utility fixture within the right-of-way who does not display the proper credentials described above.
Utility fixtures include fire hydrants, water meters, manholes and valve covers.
