Police have identified the man whose body was found under a bridge on Selma Road in Wendell on Sunday afternoon, but it’s not clear yet how he died.
A group of kids found Stephen Andrew Starnes, 18, of Wendell around 3:09 p.m. lying partially on railroad tracks that run under the Selma Road bridge between Third and Fourth streets.
Wendell Police Chief Bill Carter said police don’t yet know whether the man fell or was pushed from the bridge or if his body ended up on the tracks in some other way.
The body has been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, where an autopsy will be performed.
Police have not ruled the man’s death a homicide, Carter said.
“We’re treating it as a death investigation, which means we are doing the same things we would if it were a homicide,” he said. “But until we get a ruling from the medical examiner’s office, I wouldn’t want to speculate on what happened.”
