Criminal investigators with the N.C. Department of Insurance have charged a local woman with attempting to defraud an insurance company over a period of two years.
Joy Marie Trejo, 46, of 651 Rice Road, Zebulon, faces one count of attempting to obtain property by false pretense.
She was arrested by Wake County sheriff’s deputies just after noon on June 25 at Wendell Auto Brokers in Wendell, where the warrant for her arrest indicates she is employed, and placed under a $5,000 bond.
Trejo allegedly attempted to fraudulently obtain payment from Geico Insurance Company by presenting false claims between February 2013 and January 2015, according to investigators.
The arrest warrant charges that Trejo “did attempt to knowingly and designedly, with the intent to cheat and defraud, obtain U.S. currency from Geico Insurance Company by means of a false pretense which was calculated to deceive and did deceive.”
How many false claims, and the nature of the claims, Trejo allegedly presented to Geico is unclear. Department of Insurance officials declined to provide further details because the case is still active.
