A man who went missing during a solo bicycle trip from Massachusetts to Florida was found dead Wednesday in a tent he had pitched in Nash County.
It appears that Richard Moreau died of natural causes, said Brian Bowman, a spokesman for Knightdale, where Moreau was last seen. Knightdale police discovered his body in his tent near U.S. 264 Alternate, just west of Middlesex, Bowman said.
Moreau, 66, was fulfilling a dream of riding from his home in North Attleboro, Mass., to Florida. He stopped at a Verizon store in Knightdale last Thursday to replace his phone, then apparently continued east past Wendell. He contacted his family Friday night but hadn’t been heard from since, Bowman said.
Knightdale police worked with the phone company to determine the last location of Moreau’s new phone near Middlesex. They spent much of Wednesday searching the rural area and discovered his body and belongings in a shady spot not far from the road.
Moreau’s family distributed his photo through social media and had stayed in touch with police during the search.
“Our hearts to go out to this family who has worked so hard to find their loved one,” said Knightdale Police Captain Jacqui Boykin said in a statement. “We can’t thank them enough for being accessible and doing everything they could to help.”
