Police are asking the public for help identifying the suspect in an attempted robbery that took place at the downtown Zebulon PNC Bank Thursday morning.
No one was hurt in the incident, police said.
Zebulon officers responded to a reported robbery in progress about 9:15 a.m. at the bank, located at 300 N. Arendell Ave.
The suspect – described by police as a black male between 5-foot-9 and 6 feet tall and of medium build – reportedly approached the bank’s rear door wearing gloves, a hoodie and a mask.
In a release, police Chief Tim Hayworth said the bank manager saw the suspect approaching and held the door shut, preventing the suspect from entering even after he presented “a small black semi-automatic handgun which he began to use to strike the door,” and attempted to pull the door open.
The suspect fled without ever gaining entry into the bank, police said, running behind the nearby Rite Aid and toward Gannon Avenue.
Police also want to question occupants of a small, dark gray sports car with black wheels, possibly a Mitsubishi Eclipse, that was parked behind Mincey’s Shoe Shop on Gannon Avenue at the time the attempted robbery occurred.
Police want help from anyone who saw the suspect as he fled or possibly got into a car, or anyone who recognizes the suspect from a surveillance photo they obtained from the bank.
The suspect is seen in the photo wearing dark pants and a dark hoodie with a red scarf or bandana over his head and a light-colored mask covering his face. Police believe he was wearing a gray shirt underneath the hoodie, and said he had on black tennis shoes, a backpack and what appears to be a fanny pack.
