Two eastern Wake County residents took home blue ribbons in the King Arthur baking challenge on the last day of the State Fair.
Melissa Bentley of Zebulon took first place in the contest with her Almond Joy scones. She received a $100 gift certificate to the Baker’s Catalogue, an online store that sells the King Arthur brand flour.
Mary Boury of Knightdale took home two King Arthur cookbooks for her third place win with Maple Bacon Pecan scones.
All recipes entered in the contest had to use King Arthur flour.
Zebulon teenager Desiree Helbig also took home first place and best in show in the 16-18-year-old group of the cakes, candy, cookies and breads division at the Fair.
She made a Neapolitan layers cake and occasionally bakes wedding cakes for friends.
Carla Schechner took fourth place in the duet division of the quilt competition at the N.C. State Fair.
Schechner’s contest piece is called “Blue Hawaii,” and is a Bargello patterned quilt hand-pieced by Schechner and machine quilted by Angela Clark of Threadwaggle Quilting.
Schechner is from Raleigh. She is the mother of Heather Pew of Knightdale.
