Rivera’s a winner
Megan Anne Rivera, of Zebulon, attended the 2015 North Carolina Pure American State Pageant as a representative from Wake County. For the talent competition, she performed her lyrical ballet to the song, “Made for Worship,” by the Planetshakers. She won prizes for Best Photo Portfolio and Best Interview at the state pageant and was crowned at a special ceremony as this year’s Pure American Miss North Carolina-Little Miss Division.
In addition to winning the state title, she took home a crown, sash, trophy and a $400 discount off her national pageant application fee.
Students named to honor society
Six local residents were among 84 Johnston Community College students named to the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. Local students inducted included Morgan Broadwell, Hannah Caudill and Julie Shirah, all of Wendell; Stephanie Cassidy and Teresa Lopez, both of Knightdale, and Elise Descoteaux of Zebulon.
Student wins contest
Dawn Simone of Wendell was one of several students at Johnston Community College who were recognized for their creative videos demonstrating the value of good writing in the college’s Quality Enhancement Plan video contest.
Simone won first place and received an iPad. The upbeat, 1- to 3-minute videos illustrated how the student’s writing has improved while at JCC.
