Family and church members will gather Saturday at Hand of God Ministries in Zebulon to celebrate the birthday of the church’s founder, Bishop John Mangum.
A well-known homebuilder in the area, Mangum, a long-time member of Riley Hill Baptist Church, was led to create Hand of God Ministries as a way to meet the needs of families throughout eastern Wake County.
The church, pastored by the Rev. Herbert Gray, lead several local ministries, including a food program that collects pre-packaged foods and other foods to give to people in need during a weekly event on Thursday nights. The church also participates in a brown bag lunch program on Saturdays. The church also collects and distributes other items such as clothes, shoes and other household items as they become available.
As the church has grown, Mangum has held a variety of responsibilities from serving as something of an elder statesman to whom many people turn for advice on all manner of topics from job opportunities and tips on residential opportunities to serving as the overseer for the church’s newest building project – a new church and community center on Barbee Street.
