We have wondered aloud in this space if the Wake County school system was going about the re-conversion of East Wake High School the right way.
Turns out they have, indeed, been putting the cart before horse in some ways.
The topic was first presented at a school board committee with no significant notice to the public beyond posting an agenda of that committee meeting. Before the school board formally adopted the idea, staff began making preparations for the change.
Several closed-door sessions were held with staff in an effort to explain the changes to them. But in at least some cases, questions were left unanswered, or staffers left those sessions with muddled answers at best.
The decision was made before any of this to hire a new principal to lead the newly-reunified school without considering any of the current principals.
Now the county is backtracking a bit. School system leaders have apparently revisited their decision to give the existing principals the chance to apply for the new leadership post.
And, as it turns out, a lawyer for the school system has said the county must hold a public hearing on the decision to reorganize the school before it can actually take that action.
That public hearing was quickly scheduled for this past Tuesday, but was later postponed to March 3.
That forced the cancellation of the first of a handful of meetings of a panel made up of teachers, parents and school system administrators charged with the responsibility of advising the school system on the design of the newly-reunified school – a group established before the school board ever took formal action.
As we’ve also said in this space, we’re not sure if reunification of East Wake is a good or bad thing. But we are concerned that the rush to enact these changes will result in poor decisions. And we are concerned that it will take the school system a few years to fully plan and implement the redesign of a reunified East Wake.
The fact is, there’s no real need to rush here. Everyone is better served in the long term, if school system leaders work through the host of issues surrounding this idea before they make change just to achieve whatever purpose they are hoping to accomplish.
