Wake County bus driver trainees start at $10 an hour, and permanent drivers earn between $12.18 an hour and $19 an hour, working 6-hour days, with a long break in the middle of the day. Triangle Transit bus drivers start at $12.59 an hour, and they can work an 8-hour day.
Imagine what happens to the Wake County school children when Wake County expands bus transportation and needs more drivers. Where will our schools get their drivers?
They already lose drivers to private and public companies that pay more. The Wake County Commissioners need to help the schools right now by giving their bus drivers a well-deserved 3 percent raise and helping the school system strengthen their pool of drivers.
Our children depend on these hard-working bus drivers to get them to and from school. School bus drivers are the first person our school children see and the last one they say good bye to as they leave and return home.
We need to keep good teachers, but we also need to keep good bus drivers.
