Local All Stars shine at district level

The Tar Heel Leagues District 6 baseball and softball tournaments saw four local squads claim titles, and six area teams advanced to the state round.

The Wendell Blue 9-10 All-Star baseball team won the Tar Heel Leagues District 6 tournament to advance to the state round, which began Thursday in Smithfield.

Members of the team are Edward Apple, Jake Barbour, Preston Blackley, Brett Fuller, Will Helms, Wyatt Hollbrook, Drew Lanphere, Cameron Long, Aaron Measley, Dean Wall and Dean Williams. Wendell Blue is coached by Greg Fuller, Jody Wall and Kevin Barbour.

The district title was earned by way of a 9-7 win over the Zebulon National team on July 11. Other district wins for Wendell Blue came by scores of 10-4 over Knightdale and 8-4 over Garner.

The Zebulon team had defeated Knightdale 7-4, Louisburg 12-2 and Wendell White 13-3 to reach the championship game. The Knightdale All Stars also went 3-1 in the tournament, with wins over Garner (16-11), Wendell White (10-8), and Zebulon American (19-1).

Other scores from the district round, held at Carver Elementary in Wendell, were Garner 14, Louisburg 1; Garner 13, Zebulon American 1; Wendell White 20, Nash County 16; and Louisburg 20, Nash County 4.

Results from other age groups are as follows:

7-8 Boys: Wendell Blue eased its way to the July 24-27 state championships in Smithfield with a 16-5 District 6 title triumph over Louisburg.

The Blue crew’s other wins came against Rolesville (16-10), Louisburg (11-5) and Knightdale (16-0). Louisburg opened with a 10-9 victory over Nash County and then rebounded from its first lost to Wendell Blue with wins against Zebulon (12-3), Nash County (13-7) and Rolesville.

Other results were Nash County 5, Garner 4; Zebulon 18, Wendell White 12; Rolesville 23, Wendell White 12; and Garner 17, Zebulon 16. Rolesville also got a win over Garner and Nash County eliminated Knightdale from the tournament.

8U Girls: Louisburg put on the District 6 crown with its 18-7 win over Wendell, but Wendell joined Louisburg in moving on to the July 17-20 state championships in Shelby since the top two teams were extended invites.

Louisburg topped Wendell 15-9 in the opening game of the district round, and then defeated Rolesville 11-5 to advance to the final. Wendell’s 17-11 win over Rolesville earned the team its encounter with Louisburg in the district title spotlight.

10U Girls: Wendell shut out Bunn twice, 9-0 and 10-0, to take the title out of the two-team field in the district round. Wendell advanced to the state round, held July 17-20 in Shelby.

11-12 Boys: Zebulon placed second behind Garner and qualified for the state tournament in Smithfield.

After an 11-1 loss to Garner in the first round, Zebulon dug its way out of the losers bracket with wins over Wendell (7-2), Knightdale (forfeit) and Nash County (7-3). Garner won the championship game 10-0.

Garner’s other wins came against Nash County and Knightdale. Nash County bounced back from a loss to Louisburg with a win over Wendell, and Knightdale got its lone win against Louisburg.

13-14 Boys: Zebulon National won 19-3 over Louisburg after having lost the first game of their championship series 8-3. The Nationals moved on to compete in the July 17-20 state round in Hickory.

To reach the title game, Zebulon National defeated Zebulon American 9-1 and scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 15-14 win over Wendell.

Other scores were Louisburg 12, Wendell 8; Louisburg 16, Nash Co. 1; Zebulon American 13, Louisburg 8; and Wendell 22, Nash Co. 10.
