Parents: Irvin and Jan Smith

High School: Corinth Holders

Height, Weight: 6-foot, 175 pounds

Position: Wide Receiver

Also Considered: Lenoir-Rhyne, Tusculum, Western Carolina

Why Newberry? “I really like the way I connected with the campus and the coaching staff. And they’re giving me a great opportunity to play in an offense that I like. … And they have a regular class schedule and I prefer that.”

Major: Business

Notable: Newberry runs a spread offense similar to the one Smith played in at Corinth Holders. He’ll play slot receiver in college. After working at one of the outside receiving spots as a junior, Hampton played the slot as a senior for Corinth Holders, finishing with 832 yards receiving and 14 touchdowns in his final season. “I just really like having that ability to come across the middle of the field, make a catch and potentially turn a short pass into big yards for my team,” he said. … Smith’s breakout game came in the Pirates’ 2012 playoff loss to Reidsville where he totaled more than 200 yards receiving and caught two touchdown passes. “I’ll just remember being a part of starting a new program from scratch (at Corinth Holders) and finishing with two straight playoff appearances and a winning season,” Justin said.

Corinth Holders football coach Barry Honeycutt: “Hampton can play multiple roles on offense. We used him in the slot because we felt like it gave us a great threat, getting him into open spaces with a chance to create long runs after short passes with his athletic ability. He’s a great all-around player and will be able to help a team on offense, with kick returns and in kick coverage.”
