Three local All-Star baseball teams from Wendell and Zebulon competed in state tournaments held from July 16-19, none bringing home championships but all enjoying moments in the spotlight.
The 13-14 Zebulon All Stars competed in the Tar Heel Leagues state tournament in Shelby.
The team began its campaign with an 18-10 loss to host Shelby in 10 innings, but rebounded by defeating Broadway (Lee County) 16-13 and routing Johnston County 21-6 on Saturday.
In the consolation finals on Sunday, however, the team came up short in a rematch with Shelby, falling 15-3.

Members of the Tar Heel Leagues District VI title team are Mitch Smith, Gavin Pearce, Blake Boyette, Colby Creech, Cole Alphin, Brian Killette, Shane Knight, Cameron Eddins, Chip Raynor, Dawson Creech, Jake Wilder, Cody Hardy and Robert Hough. The team coaches are Travis Smith, Allen Boyette, Pete Alphin and David Creech.
The age 13-14 Wendell All Stars went 1-2 in the Statewide Athletic Committee (SWAC) tournament in New Bern.
After winning the title in the same tournament last year, a heartbreaking 8-7, 15-inning loss in the final game ended this year’s campaign.
The team consisted of Cameron Evans, Ollie Allen, Andrew Fryett, Michael Brown, Presley Johnson, Trevor Stafford, Nick Dart, Harrison Neese, Austin King, Daniel Carter, Ben lister, Jackson Taylor; and coaches Jimmy Johnson, Blake King, Alex Neese and Dan Carter.
The 9-10 Wendell White All Stars, meanwhile, came up on the losing end in their two games at the SWAC tournament in Havelock, giving up 9-3 and 13-3 decisions in the two contests, respectively. The team had won three consecutive games in the district tournament earlier this summer to qualify.
Members of the 9-10 team are Matthew Edwards, Memphis Neyland, Dallas Baker, Johnathan Montague, Connor Fitts, Jeremy Williams, Sam Dutton, Cameron Brown, Carson Dunn, Ethan Clinebelle; and coaches Robert Clinebelle, Don Brown, Kenny Fitts and Bobby Dutton.
A number of other local All-Star teams have participated in recent tournaments while others are set to play in upcoming events.
Competing in the Tar Heel Leagues softball tournaments from July 23-26 in Smithfield are the 8U Wendell All-Stars, the 10U Wendell All-Stars and 12U Zebulon All-Stars.
In baseball, the 7-8 Wendell Blue, 9-10 Wendell Blue and 7-8 Wendell White All-Star teams will each take the field in Tar Heel Leagues tournaments in Washington from July 30 to August 2.
