Why Appalachian State? Visiting the school and her future teammates, Mikaya said sensed she would be a good fit at App State. “It was more of a home-type atmosphere and I just clicked with everyone, and the campus is beautiful,” she said. She intends to major in physics.
Most Memorable: The 5-foot-6 point guard said she will miss the girls basketball program in general at Knightdale, and getting to attend camp at Appalachian State with her high school teammates. A large crowd filled nearly half the Knightdale gym to show support Mikaya on signing day, as school leaders used her as an example to other students that hard work pays off. “It just takes a lot of sacrifice and hard work,” Mikaya said.
Notable: Mikaya has never missed out on an All-Academic list. The National Honor Society inductee carries a 4.1 weighted GPA to go along with her leadership on the court. She was an All-Greater Neuse River 4A Conference selection and team MVP her sophomore and junior seasons. She’s looking forward to the experience ahead working with coach Angel Elderkin at Appalachian State.
Knightdale coach Trent Bunn: “She’s a one-woman press breaker and her work ethic is unmatched. She is also a pleasure to be around, a well-rounded student athlete, very giving over herself and her time to help others.”
