Two men died in a late-night crash on I-40 last weekend near the Wake and Johnston county line when a Garner-area resident plowed into the back of a slow driver with a flat tire.
The crash, which occured Sunday at 12:30 a.m., killed two in the rear-ended car: Kevin Lamont Johnson of southeast Raleigh, the driver, and Rickie Neal Richardson Jr. of Fuquay-Varina, who was seated in the right rear seat.
According to State Highway Patrol Spokesman Jeff Gordon, Johnson’s Chevrolet sedan had been traveling in the right lane of westbound I-40 with a flat tire at about 15 miles per hour.
A 2004 Cadillac car driven by Jermaine Judd of Colonial Drive (just off Garner’s western border) had been traveling at 70 mph, the posted speed limit. The car in front of Judd swerved to avoid Johnson’s car. Judd failed to do the same.
Never miss a local story.
Judd was transported to WakeMed with serious injuries, according to the report. Also transported to WakeMed were Johnson’s daughter, a minor who was sitting in the rear, and Felicia Johnson, his sister.
Judd has been charged with driving while his license was revoked, according to Gordon.
Gordon could not say whether Johnson had his hazard lights on or not.
