Johnston Community College has a new program for its alumni. On July 9 the school kicked off its Back to Class Alumni Scholarship Program. At least 30 former students attended an information session outlining the program. So far 20 JCC alumni have enrolled in a class for the fall semester.
“The potential of completing another class is always good, especially if it’s paid for,” said alumna Karla Gleva of Knightdale.
Coordinated by the JCC Foundation, the Back to Class Alumni Scholarship Program is designed to reconnect graduates with the college while encouraging their continued education, said Twyla Wells, the foundation’s executive director.
“Given the fallout from the recent years of extreme economic challenges and our ever increasing global economy, there is the realization of our foundation that many of our alumni’s present educational and training proficiencies are no longer sufficient for current workforce needs,” Wells said.
“We felt this was an excellent opportunity to get alumni reconnected to the college while building a wonderful new addition to our existing programs being supported by the JCC Foundation.”
“The foundation is very excited to begin reaching out to our alumni and what better way to do this than by offering our graduates something of tangible benefit,” she added.
Wells said anyone who has earned a curriculum certificate, degree, or diploma from JCC and who is not currently enrolled in school can take up to three curriculum credit hours or 48 continuing education hours for free. Students are responsible for student fees, books, and any materials they need for class.
During the kick off session counselors, admissions and registration staff and deans answered questions about eligible course options and assisted with enrollment.
Jonathan Faison of Micro earned his associate degree in networking technology in 2009. Faison said the free class is a nice incentive since he’s considering a career change.
“I’m here to learn more about the bioworks program,” Faison said. “I’m just not satisfied where I’m at right now, and I just want to learn more about what other career opportunities are available.”
The next Back to Class information and enrollment session is 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, in the Learning Resource Center. To register or to find out more information about alumni opportunities, call 919-209-2222 or visit johnstoncc.edu/foundation.
