Garner to dedicate veterans memorial
A dedication ceremony for the Garner Veterans Memorial is scheduled from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 4, at Lake Benson Park, 921 Buffaloe Road, Garner. The Rand’s Mill Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and Town of Garner will hold a brief wreath-laying ceremony at the memorial at 7 p.m. Friday, May 3.
The Garner High School Symphonic Band will perform before the ceremony, followed by The Hall Sisters and former Miss North Carolina, Dana Stephenson. N.C. Secretary of Transportation Tony Tata will deliver the keynote speech.
The memorial, a project of the Garner Veterans Memorial Committee, features stone tablets with the names of the veterans on one side and earth-cast sculptures by Raleigh artist Thomas Sayre on the other.

Summer reading skills classes
N.C. State University will offer reading skills for children 4 and older, and for adults in Johnston County. The programs will begin the week of June 10 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 218 S. Second St., Smithfield, and at Johnston Community College, 245 College Road, Smithfield. Tuition and materials fees vary by program level.
