A winter mix that swept through the Triangle left schools closed and meetings canceled last week.
Freezing temperatures iced roads, making it dangerous for drivers, and prompting Governor Pat McCrory to issue a State of Emergency, warning people to stay off the highways.
Johnston County Schools and Wake County Public School System both canceled school Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Children and some of their parents got out in the early morning and went sledding in their neighborhoods.
Street crews in Garner utilized seven snow plows to clear all primary routes, 90 percent of town collector streets, and approximately 70 percent of neighborhood streets were at least cleared of one lane, Rick Mercier, spokesman for the town, said Tuesday night.

Lt. Chris Clayton, a spokesman for the Garner Police Department, said there was only one weather-related wreck Monday night and it happened after 9 p.m. With Wake and Johnston Counties canceling school, most people stayed inside. Children and some of their parents got out in the early morning and went sledding in their neighborhoods.
Tuesday night’s town council meeting, and Wednesday night’s Wake Public Transit Informational Meeting, were both canceled after the threat of freezing temperatures that eventually hit the teens. The town announced the council meeting was rescheduled for Tuesday at 5 p.m. As of Wednesday night, there had been no new time from the Wake Public Transit meeting.
The town council meeting’s agenda included a new public hearing for a cell phone tower and a discussion on pay raises for staff members.
Skyway Towers is requesting site approval for the construction of a T-Mobile cell phone tower. The proposed site is on 9700 Jordan Road. The Planning Commission reviewed the plan at a January 12 meeting and voted unanimously recommend approval of the towers with three conditions specific for the site.
A public hearing was set on Feb. 5, but no member from the public showed up. The town announced they would have another public hearing because they did not send out letters to adjacent property owners prior to the meeting as required by state law.
Mercier said there was an inadvertent oversight.
Pat Thomas of the MAPS group conducted the 2014-15 Pay and Classification Study. It reviews the town’s full-time positions and market salary data. Thomas is recommending that several positions be reclassified to higher pay grades.
The recommendations have been reviewed and will be included in the budget process.
Two of the positions recommended for hire pay grades are currently vacant.
Thomas recommended moving the Human Resource Director position from pay grade 32 to pay grade 34. That means the minimum salary a person hired would make increases from $67,000 to $74,000. The maximum hired salary increases from $103,000 to $115,000.
The other vacant position she is recommending increase its pay grade is the Senior Administrative Support Specialist. That position would go from a pay grade 19 to 20, which is about a $2,000 increase in salary.
Council members would have to vote to approve those changes.
