Local men who have been killed while in the defense of their country and the families of men and women who have died while serving in the military will be honored on Saturday, Dec. 10 at noon at the Garner Veterans Memorial.
The Town of Garner, the Garner Optimist Club and Show N Ministries are coming together for the community’s first Christmas wreath placement and Gold Star Christmas tree.
The catalyst for the event is the laying of wreaths on the graves of military personnel at Arlington National Cemetery during the holiday season.
The wreaths at Arlington are not placed as decorations, but as memorials.
Never miss a local story.
The same will be true at the Garner Veterans Memorial.
The Garner Optimist Club, which sales wreaths and Christmas trees during the holidays, is providing the wreaths and the Gold Star tree, a 10-foot Frazier fir.
The tree will be decorated with 66 gold stars to represent the men who are memorialized at the monument. Other gold stars will be available to be placed on the tree by any Gold Star families who attend.
The outdoor ceremony is expected to be brief.
Any Gold Star Family that expects to participate in the wreath placement service and Gold Star recognition can call 919-812-5711.
