While the Timber Springs Singers were starting their musical concert in the auditorium Thursday night – moments before he was to surprise parents – Scotty McCreery was in his old school’s library meeting American Idol’s biggest fan.
Courtney Moss, 18, of Nash County, suffered most of her life with a serious heart condition. She received a heart transplant at Duke Hospital nine months ago and was released on her 18th birthday.
Her one wish: To go to a season finale taping of American Idol.
Make-A-Wish Eastern North Carolina granted her wish to go to the American Idol finale and she flew out earlier in the week.
Each Make-A-Wish participant has a party for their wish to be granted. Jerry Peters, vice president of Make a Wish Eastern NC, said a few people at the party were saying that McCreery would be in town and wanted to help coordinate their meet up.
“It was a nice thing that happened,” Peters said. “It was more of an enhancement to the wish.”
McCreery was going to be at Timber Drive Elementary to surprise a 5th grade music class and sing with them in their concert.
Soon enough, Moss and her family found herself in Garner, walking through the library doors, where McCreery was waiting.
At first she seemed nervous.
“I heard you’re an American Idol fan?” McCreery asked her.
Then she perked up.
“Yes, I’ve seen every season,” Moss said.
“Did you watch season 10?” McCreery asked Moss.
“Yes, and I voted for you,” she replied. Together they laughed.
They talked about her furture trip to LA. It would be her first time on the West Coast so McCreery recommended they check out “In-And-Out Burger.”
“It’s like the Bojangles of the West,” he told her.
The two posed for pictures together and talked a little more before McCreery got on stage to sing. He told her to tweet him, so he could follow her. Moss even got a chance to watch him sing live with the Timber Drive music chorus.
“She’s one of the strongest girls I’ve met,” McCreery said. “She’s been through so much. They’ve told me she’s been through over 30 operations and procedures. For her to be doing as good as she is as strong as she is, it’s cool for me to come see her.
“And she’s going to Idol, so she’s got a great wish coming true and I’m just glad to be a part of it.”
