World-class track star and film-maker Johnny Dutch has made another short film.
Dutch, a Clayton High grad, said he wrote a script for the movie during the World Championships in the summer in Bejing. He didn’t make the finals of the World Championships so he decided to put the focus on film, one of his other loves.
Once he got back home, he looked for professional actors and actresses to cast for the movie and locations to shoot for the movie.
“I had to take my mind off track because I was so devastated,” he said. “Film has already given me that outlet.”
Never miss a local story.
Dutch produces his own movies. After he found the right actors – one from Los Angeles and two from New York – they shot the film in three days in Columbia.
“We gutted it out, hardly got any sleep,” Dutch said. “I literally got five hours of sleep in three days. I don’t know how I made it through.
“I’m really proud of it because we put so much into it.”
The movie is called “Charlie.” It is based on a urban legend. Three college students play a game to summon a ghost named “Charlie.” When Charlie was alive he was a professor by day and clown by night.
He used his job as a clown to have an affair with a student. When he wife found out she killed him and the girl and disappeared.
“Legend has it, if you dial “6-1-7 on your phone and say the Charlie chant, you can summon his ghost,” Dutch said. “He’s a huge threat once he comes.
He said when he originally wrote the script, it was supposed to be a thriller and scary movie. But as the actors began to act, the film, he said, began to take on a life of its own.
He describes it as a “corky, weird, popcorn, horror flick.”
He said it has a ‘60s and ‘70s vibe to it. The film was shot with one camera. He used many different camera angles. The film is 25 minutes long.
Dutch said his next plan is to submit the film into a local, national and international film festivals.
“Hopefully it is selected and people pick it up,” Dutch said. “I would love for someone to pick up my script. It would be awesome.”
Dutch’s goal is to work with some of the biggest directors in the world like Spike Lee, Tyler Perry and Quentin Tarantino.
“I just gotta keep working at it, and maybe one will hit,” he said.
