A Raleigh man was arrested Monday for assaulting a woman in a movie theater, after the woman’s purse hit the man’s daughter while she was searching for a seat, police said Wednesday.
Police say, Suzanne Crone and her husband were looking for a seat in a theater at Regal White Oak on Monday evening. As she was walking down the aisle, her purse hit the daughter of Escamillo Latimore.
“He got upset and started causing a commotion,” Garner Police Lt. Joe Binns said. “Some words happened between two patrons at the movie theater.”
Binns said Latimore then got up and pushed Crone to the ground and got on top of her. Crone’s husband then hit Latimore and tried to get him off his wife.
More patrons in the theater helped out and grabbed Latimore and pulled him from the theater and held him outside.
Police were called to the scene around 7:30 p.m.
When police arrived, Binns said the man was irate and did not listen to commands or follow directions. They tried to put him in custody to find out what happened but he was being combative, Binns said.
Officers used a stun gun to subdue the man to avoid physical confrontation.
“He wouldn’t follow directions or commands, and officers felt that was the best alternative,” Binns said.
Binns said the police department is confident officers used the correct procedures when dealing with the man.
“Absolutely,” he said. “When you have a combative individual, you have an option to use the taser.”
He said the option of using the stun gun is so officers don’t have to get into a physical altercation with a person.
Regal White Oak 17, the movie theater, declined to comment directing comment to its corporate office. Efforts to reach someone at the corporate office were unsuccessful.
Binns said no one else will be charged.
It is uncertain whether the woman went to the hospital.
